It’s Official: Puerto Rico Is ASPE’s 60th Chapter Puerto Rico was chartered on Thursday, July 9, as the Society's 60th chapter. ASPE President Julius Ballanco and Executive Director Stanley Wolfson conducted the official chartering ceremony. The first election of officers was held, and the chapter's charter members in attendance signed the charter. (All charter members will be given the opportunity to sign the original charter.) ASPE Los Angeles Chapter Congratulates Plumbing System Design Graduates The Plumbing Systems Design program, offered by UCLA Extension and ASPE’s LA Chapter, ended June 2009. Enrolled students completed three quarters of comprehensive education, consisting of more than 110 hours of class contact, homework, quizzes, a midterm, and a final exam for each quarter. 24 students participated, and the LA Chapter congratulates them for their perseverance and interest in improving their skills. Congratulations to Scholarship Recipients ASPE’s Dallas/Ft. Worth Chapter would like to congratulate the 2009 DFW ASPE Scholarship Recipients: Mohammad Gharbieh and John Dulany. The scholarship will help both recipients obtain engineering degrees from Southern Methodist University and Texas Tech University respectively. The DFW ASPE Chapter is proud to support these in their studies.

INDUSTRY NEWS Code Change May Make California Graywater Systems Easier to Install In response to continuing drought conditions, the California Department of Housing and Community Development has proposed more lenient graywater standards. According to the Express Terms for Proposed Emergency Building Standards, a clothes washer or other single-fixture, residential graywater system, such as a shower, could be installed or altered without a construction permit. If approved, the new code could take effect as early as August 4.
Rainwater Harvesting Mandated in Tucson According to the Associated Press, under the nation's first municipal rainwater harvesting ordinance for commercial projects, Tucson developers building new business, corporate, or commercial structures will have to supply half of the water needed for landscaping from harvested rainwater starting next year. Use of 2008 NYC Construction Codes Is Now Required The one-year interim period to use the 2008 NYC Construction Codes or the 1968 Building Code ended on July 1. On that date, the 2008 codes, which are based on the International Building, Plumbing, Mechanical, and Fuel Gas Codes, were mandated by the New York City Department of Buildings for all new construction. The change represents the first major modernization of the city’s building codes in nearly 40 years. Click here to view the NYC Construction Codes.
Chicago Offering Tours of Buckingham Fountain The Parkways Foundation and Chicago Park District are offering visitors a rare chance to tour Chicago’s Clarence Buckingham Memorial Fountain’s underground pump works. The 30-minute tours are offered each Friday at noon and at again 12:30 p.m. through Friday, Sept. 4. All proceeds from the Buckingham Fountain tours will benefit the restoration of Buckingham Fountain. The second phase of renovations is slated to begin during the 2009–2010 winter hiatus and will include the restoration and repair of the fountain itself, including rebuilding the lower basin, installation of a new plumbing system, repair of the electrical system, and rehabilitation of the historic pump house. Changes Proposed to Standard 90.1 Proposed changes designed to improve the energy efficiency of buildings covered by ASHRAE/IESNA Standard 90.1: Energy Standard for Buildings Except Low-Rise Residential Buildings are open for public comment. Among the proposed addendum is bh, which would require supply air temperature reset in multiple-zone HVAC systems. Other addenda include f, which would allow a number of paths to reduce building roof load; bq, which reduces additional lighting power allowances by reducing both lighting energy and the energy needed to cool the space; and bn, which requires orientation of fenestration to be considered to reduce thermal loads. Researchers Achieve Major Breakthrough with Water Desalination System Researchers at the UCLA Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science have developed a mini-mobile-modular (M3) "smart" desalination and filtration system that can generate 6,000 gallons of drinking water per day from the sea or 8,000 to 9,000 gallons per day from brackish groundwater. The system is compact enough to be transported anywhere in the back of a van.
IAPMO Seeking Volunteers to Help Develop Model Codes IAPMO is accepting applications from individuals wishing to participate on the newly formed Technical Correlating Committee toward the development of the 2012 editions of the Uniform Plumbing Code and Uniform Mechanical Code. Change to ASHRAE Residential Standard Facilitates IAQ Improvements ASHRAE has approved a change to its residential ventilation standard to encourage home retrofits to improve indoor air quality. Addendum e to ANSI/ASHRAE Standard 62.2-2007: Ventilation and Acceptable Indoor Air Quality in Low-Rise Residential Buildings allows alternative methods for meeting the standard’s requirements regarding kitchen and bathroom exhaust fans. The standard currently requires fans in those rooms. An example of an alternative compliance path that is allowed under the addendum is increasing the overall whole-house ventilation rate to compensate for insufficient or non-existent bathroom exhaust.
ICC Offers Residential Sprinkler Installer Exam The ICC Residential Sprinkler Installer Examination tests builders, plumbers, and other professional contractors on their knowledge of the sprinkler requirements in the 2009 International Residential Code. Those who pass the exam will receive official documentation of their score report from the ICC that may be presented as evidence for state licensure or other business purposes. The exam assesses competency in five areas: sprinkler components, piping components, water supply, system design, and installation. Click here for more information.
