  • Solar Thermal Water Heating: Opportunity Knocks
Jeffrey Ross-Bain, PE, LEED AP, BEM P
Water heating represents about 3.5 percent of all U.S. energy use, and the potential energy savings from the deployment of solar thermal systems is substantial. Heating water with the sun’s energy is not new, is not untested, and does not require a designer
to leap into unknown technical territory. This article introduces various specifics about heating water with the sun, describes some of the system types, introduces basic design and sizing principles, provides industry reference documents, and encourages plumbing designers to remain competitive by learning these systems and being able to offer solar thermal solutions where applicable.
  • Benefits of BIM for Plumbing and Fire Protection Engineers
    Sean Rains
BIM (building information modeling) is one of the largest and most rapidly growing developments in the MEP industry, yet many engineering firms have not gotten involved for various reasons. Numerous articles have been devoted to the trends and benefits of BIM modeling. However, few have been devoted to how BIM directly relates to plumbing and fire protection design, so this article looks specifically at some of the factors that make BIM beneficial in those industries.
  • Rainwater Harvesting, Part 2: Treating Harvested Rainwater and System Design
    Peter S. Cartwright, PE
In this follow-up to the June 2010 cover story, the author delves into how to treat harvested water, including methods such as microfiltration, ultrafiltration, nanofiltration, reverse osmosis, activated carbon adsorption, disinfection, and ultraviolet irradiation. He also discusses some system design, monitoring, and reporting requirements, as well as how rainwater harvesting can help designers obtain LEED points for water efficiency.
